The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and unspoiled Himalayan regions, leading to the base of the magnificent Mount Makalu (8,485m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. Unlike the more crowded trekking routes, Makalu offers raw wilderness, dramatic landscapes, and a true sense of adventure far from the mainstream trails.
This trek passes through the pristine forests and alpine valleys of the Makalu Barun National Park, home to rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems. From subtropical forests to high glacial terrain, the scenery constantly transforms as you ascend, offering breathtaking views of Himalayan giants including Mount Everest and Lhotse.
Reaching Makalu Base Camp is a powerful and rewarding experience, surrounded by towering peaks, glaciers, and vast Himalayan silence. Ideal for adventure seekers and experienced trekkers, this journey offers solitude, authenticity, and one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in Nepal.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400m)
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you are warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a short briefing about the adventure ahead while preparing for one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan journeys.
Day 2: Fly to Tumlingtar & Drive to Num (1560m)
A scenic flight takes you to Tumlingtar in eastern Nepal, followed by a picturesque drive through rolling hills and rural villages to Num. This beautiful hillside settlement marks the gateway to the Makalu region.
Day 3: Num to Seduwa (1510m)
The trek begins with a steep descent through forests and terraced fields to the Arun River, followed by a steady climb to Seduwa. You officially enter the pristine wilderness of the Makalu Barun National Park.
Day 4: Seduwa to Tashi Gaun (2070m)
A gradual ascent through traditional villages and lush forests leads you to Tashi Gaun, the last permanent settlement before entering higher alpine terrain. Mountain views begin to unfold as you gain elevation.
Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Tashi Gaun
A rest and exploration day to help your body adjust to altitude. Short hikes around the village offer beautiful views and a glimpse into local mountain life.
Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner / Lodge
Day 6: Tashi Gaun to Khongma (3760m)
One of the more challenging days, as you climb steep trails through dense forests and stone stairways. Gradually, the landscape changes from greenery to alpine terrain as you reach Khongma.
Day 7: Khongma to Dobato (3610m)
Cross scenic high passes with spectacular Himalayan views before descending toward Dobato. The dramatic ridgelines and vast valleys make today especially rewarding.
Day 8: Dobato to Yangle Kharka (3557m)
Descend into the beautiful Barun Valley, walking alongside rivers and yak pastures. Towering rock faces and snow peaks surround you as you arrive at Yangle Kharka.
Day 9: Yangle Kharka to Langmale Kharka (4410m)
The valley widens as you ascend gradually through alpine meadows. Snow-covered peaks begin dominating the skyline, and the air grows thinner and crisper
Day 10: Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp (4870m)
A truly spectacular day as you reach the base of the majestic Mount Makalu. Surrounded by glaciers, dramatic rock faces, and towering Himalayan giants, this is a moment of pride and accomplishment.
Day 11: Exploration Day at Makalu Base Camp
Spend the day exploring the glacial surroundings and enjoying panoramic views of Makalu and neighboring peaks. The silence and grandeur of the high Himalayas create an unforgettable experience.
Day 12: Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka
Begin your descent, retracing your steps down the valley while enjoying fresh perspectives of the landscapes you climbed through.
Day 13: Yangle Kharka to Khongma
Climb back toward Khongma, passing through alpine ridges and rugged mountain scenery.
Day 14: Khongma to Seduwa
Descend through forests and traditional villages as you gradually return to lower elevations.
Day 15: Seduwa to Num & Drive to Tumlingtar
A final trekking day brings you back to Num, followed by a scenic drive to Tumlingtar where you can relax after the long mountain journey.
Day 16: Fly to Kathmandu
Take a morning flight back to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for rest or exploration.
Day 17: Final Departure
Transfer to the International Airport for your onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of the remote Makalu region.
